Cyprus Lighthouse
Paphos, Cyprus
2018
The competition, organised by the Cyprus School of Architecture (CYSOA), seeks conceptual designs for a new lighthouse structure and local landmark on Geroskipou beach. The Lighthouse competition involves the design of an unmanned structure with a light-source to act as a focal point for the area. The structure may be constructed from any material, and innovation and unusual formal expression are encouraged. The only requirement is that the light-source is accessible for maintenance. The “Lighthouse” should be positioned anywhere along Geroskipou Beach in Paphos, Cyprus.
Far-Os glows in the deep blue Mediterranean sky, Its roots are within the sandy beach but it keep flying, dancing with the wind, creates a tower of light that guides people as it guides ships.
Hundreds of balloons each carry a small lighting source are what defines Far-Os, each balloon is connected to the ground via a fiber cable which provides the light source with the needed electricity, each cable have a different length allowing the balloons to glow in different levels forming the traditional “lighthouse tower form” but with lights instead of walls. All the fiber cables are connected to one large rectangular wooden base on the beach that works as a generator of power to the Far Os.
